This article will provide in more detail, information on the type of ghosts known as 'Imprints', also known as 'residual hauntings'. These are the type of ghosts that appear to act as though they are living out the same set of past events over and over again. 'Imprints' are totally oblivious to their surroundings and anyone present, any attempt to communicate or interact with these types of ghosts only results in them carrying on as normal, as though it was you who were the ghost. A good analogy of the phenomenon is likening it to watching a short clip of a movie been played on a loop by a 3D holographic projector.
The stone tape theory gives for many investigators the perfect explanation for this type of ghosts sighting. The theory suggests that our planets electromagnetic field (EMF) acts as a kind of tape recording device, and that under the right conditions past events can be played back. This seems especially true at scenes of high energy events of the past such as; murders, battlefield battles, accidents and other violent events of the past. This probably goes a long way to explaining why places were such occurrences have happened are often haunted by this type of ghosts. A good example been Gettysburg were sightings of ghosts doing battle are often reported, playing out just as it did all those years ago.
Many 'imprint' ghosts sightings however are of ghosts seemingly going about their daily lives, seen walking the hallway for instance, only to then walk through the wall were there was in their lifetime a door. In such instances it would seem there was no 'high energy' event to cause the recording, although it is impossible to know the circumstances and emotions surrounding these seemingly mundane events. It has been noted though that some 'imprint' ghosts appear to fade away more and more each time they are seen, until eventually the sightings stop altogether. This could explain why some ghosts have not been seen for years, perhaps like an old video tape, the recording gets weaker each time it is viewed.
When researching for a ghost hunt you should try to figure out the type of ghost your going to be dealing with. The two things that make a imprint/ residual haunting stand out are:

When researching for a ghost hunt you should try to figure out the type of ghost your going to be dealing with. The two things that make a imprint/ residual haunting stand out are:
- Non-interaction. When reviewing witness reports, did the witness' try communicating, only to be met with silence? As though their words had not been heard? Did they try interacting perhaps? Again showing no difference to the ghosts behavior?
- Behavior. Did it appear as though the ghosts was playing out a set of events, oblivious to their surroundings? Was it like watching a scene from a film been played out?
- The time of past sightings. Most hauntings of this type are surprisingly predictable, for instance the recording usually always replays itself at the same time. Knowing the time that the ghosts has been seen before, you should plan your investigation around that time.
- The location. Try to find the exact locations of were the sighting both starts and ends and also the route taken. For example: The ghost lady appears at the window before walking down the stairs, takes a left then vanishes through the wall. You can then set up cameras, EVP machines and other ghost hunting devices at these locations.
