History´s first sci-fi movie?

"The journey to the moon" (1902) By  Georges Méliès 
Must surely be the first science fiction movie ever created? It is no Ridley Scott or George Lucas production but for the hardcore science fiction fan it offers a pretty interesting history lesson of how the genre began 110 years ago

The film is based on books by another science fiction pioneer Jules Verne, It tells of a committee´ of astronomers who, after a fierce debate decides to build a spaceship and travel to the moon.When finished the spacecraft actually manages to transport the crew to the moon, where they encounter strange landscapes and belligerent aliens who turns out to be quite fragile and easy to kill with just a punch.

For those who think the story is a bit poor, it may be worth thinking about the film's release year, 1902. "The journey to the moon" was released when the medium of film was pretty much born, years before the space adventure premiere paying  audience was waiting in line outside theaters just to see a few minutes of  film compiled of stills of a bodybuilder in various poses. At this time the films often had no real story's to tell, So with "The journey to the moon" Méliès was actually in the forefront of revolutionizing the art of film making .

The film is pretty hilarious and one scene is crazier than the other. The gang of "astronomers" in their bushy false beard and wizard cone hats with the arms flapping and bodies rock as if they were a bunch of chickens who tried to lift off the ground in a strong hurricane. The rocket is fired like a cannon ball and finally hit the moon and impaling it like a dart. Seconds later, the men disembark the craft, confused and wildly gesticulating. Soon it will be night and all lie down to sleep. When morning comes we get to see the first aliens in film history, whose wacky but violent behavior and tribal warrior appearance seems more inspired by colonialist approaching savage tribes than the highly sophisticated and intelligent aliens in modern films. The film ends with an epic battle between our crazy professors and the wild savage aliens
