Haunted Harpy in the Sallie House

harpy

There have been a number of reported encounters of these foul creatures which savagely ravage people by their claws, they are angry women. It is believed they originated in Greek mythology and are known as harpies. A harpy is part woman and part bird. There is a story which had happened at a place refereed to as the Sallie house located in Atchison, Kansas. The physical attacks which happened seem to resemble a claw scratch by of these creatures, only this time it was a haunted harpy.

This strange home built in 1872, has quite a haunted history dating back to 1906, when according to a legend, the first haunting began. A doctor deemed a young girl age six to be sick with a severe stomach ache. This same doctor later discovered she was suffering from appendicitis. As the surgery was being preformed to help her, the young restless girl kept moving, this kept the doctor from being able to help her and she then died on the operating table.

Her cursed soul was doomed to torment those who crossed her domain. As time continued to pass by, more spirits seemingly followed her there at the same home. These rather demonic evil spirits seemed to ward off anyone who got near her. They acted like her own personal body guards, it seems any males who lived at the home were in immediate danger.

Small Sallie’s spirit remained at this home her entire existence, trapped between worlds. The sinister spirits who protect Sallie are quite violent. Animals seem to react to this home giving strange looks, for example dogs barking at unseen presences. Everyone who has stayed at this home has experienced some form or another of a paranormal experience. Everything from objects being turned upside down to being misplaced or vanishing entirely.

Pickmans

Fast forwarding to a more modern time, investigations into this home continued further, a television series titled “Sightings” captured the Pickman family who lived there with their son who was just a baby at the time. They documented physical evidence of Mr. Pickman (Tony) being attacked live on camera, a flower was also seen at the start on camera and as the interview continued with Tony’s wife Debra, the flower appeared to be burnt to a crisp. A number of psychics have tried to communicate with the restless spirits. These people were there trying to help in some way only to flee in terror.

Tony Pickman

Full-bodied apparitions have been seen by Tony who was terrorized and traumatized by Sallie and her protectors. More claw marks have been documented on his body (3 cut marks like from a claw) and more random items have been thrown around rooms. (including his bed violently shaking) A reenactment of this encounter can be seen on a television series titled: “Paranormal Witness” which aired on the SyFy channel.

It seems these spirits are determined to stop at nothing, eventually many left for safer pastures.

World’s most haunted island for sale

haunted island

Incredibly one of the most haunted places on Earth is now up for sale. It was once designated as a psychiatric ward in an abandoned hospital. The place is located in Venice, Italy on an island known as Poveglia. There are a number of burial grounds here and extreme paranormal presences have been talked about for years.

room

The actual island area is condemned and not safe for the public to wander around in currently. The ruins of this hospital are very unstable just as much as the former patients who were treated here. Ghostly suspicions have been a thing people have talked about, hearing shrilling cries of laughter and madness abound.

inside

These haunted grounds rest upon a multi-million dollar assessed real estate area. The island is a stones throw away from civilization, which plays host to the Venice Film Festival each year on the Lido.

If any corporation or individual is interested in this island they will have to bring a pretty penny; as the asking price is currently set in the millions of dollars. No exact price has yet to be given, but an estimation of the island value could reach upwards of $841 million. However from its haunted history, not many takers are interested for different reasons, the Italian government certainly has its hands full.

One reason this property is so valuable is the location also being a mere 10 minutes away from Saint Marco Square. It is known just as “the Piazza”. All of the other urban spaces within the city are called “campi”.

Saint Marco Square

All the troubles for this island started back in 1793, when the island was then sealed off as a quarantine zone. Perhaps the history is one explanation why nobody wants to actually go there. The island was also used as a dumping ground for many Europeans – who were dying from the plague. Rumors still float around saying these souls wander the island especially at night terrifying those who they want.

After time passed, the hospital was once used as a senior hospital. It was believed this was only a cover however for the institution to operate secretly on people. There were botched lobotomies done and a doctor even killed himself by jumping off the top of the hospital building.

It was believed this same doctor was feeling the wraith of the patients who he worked on previously. The infection spread rather quickly killing off a number of people from the plague. This partly inspires the belief which fuels the idea behind the island being haunted.

The deadline for bidding is May 6, 2014 and is available on a 99 year lease. Italy has also put up 4 other prime pieces of property on the market as well to gain funding for various projects.

The most haunted places in the world

There are countless purported most haunted places in the world. In fact, you probably know someone who claims to live in a haunted location or have visited one. These types of reported hauntings are so common as to be almost everyday. In various places around the world, there is a different type of haunting. These locations are steeped in cultural tradition and are typically home to historical tragedies. The most haunted places in the world have had so many witnesses to their ghoulish activity that it is hard to ignore.

Leap Castle, County Offaly, Ireland

Most Haunted Places in the World: Leap Castle

Leap Castle

Leap Castle is interesting in that, not only is it located in one of the most superstitious countries, it reportedly has two types of haunting. The castle was built in the 16th century and has been occupied ever since. There has been a lot of conflict around the castle. According to one legend, the brothers who were to build the castle had a deadly contest. They leapt off the rocks where the castle is now. The one who lived got their clan and the castle.

Within the castle are several supposedly haunted locations and many supposed ghosts. The chapel is said to be haunted by a priest. It also contains an oubliette, which raises the hair on more than a few arms, as oubliettes have a bad reputation for being made into small prisons. (“The Labyrinth,” anyone?) Other ghosts and creepy places include The Red Lady, The Murdered Woman and “The Murder Hole Room.” These are all what you might think of as traditional hauntings. The spirits are those of naturally deceased or murdered people who interact with visitors benignly or maliciously.

Leap Castle is supposedly home to what is known as an Elemental. In other words, there is a spirit in the castle that was never human. Some stories connect it to early Druids practicing at the site. Others say a magician placed the spirit in the castle. Locals seem to think the spirit is actually that of a man who died of leprosy. No matter where it is from, it is a very grotesque being. It is humanoid with big, black, decomposing eyes, greenish skin, loose lips, a jaw that sets back into the neck, claw-like fingers and is quite smelly. Descriptions sometimes vary, but there is no doubt that the creature witnesses have claimed to see for some time is rather disgusting.

Aokigahara Forest, near Mount Fuji, Japan

Most Haunted Places in the World: Aokigahara Forest

Aokigahara Forest

Haunted places do not all have ancient or even centuries old tales to chill the bones. Some, like Aokigahara Forest, have only recently developed a reputation for ghostly inhabitation. Just in the past few decades, Aokigahara Forest has been the last stop for hundreds of people. It is so bad that the forest needs to be searched regularly for bodies. Between 50 and 100, sometimes more, bodies are pulled out annually. Why do so many people die there? They go there to commit suicide.

Aokigahara Forest is going to feel like a sinister place to many people based on its reputation for death alone. Going for a casual stroll is out of the question for anyone save those purely ignorant of its history. The natural peace of the place is replaced by signs asking suicidal visitors to get help. Instead, dozens of them go into the forest to hang themselves or overdose on drugs. It is hard to say why it is so popular a place to leave life, but the practice has certainly sapped the forest of any other appeal it had, save ghost hunting.

LaLaurie House and Sultan’s Palace, New Orleans

Most Haunted Places in the World: The LaLaurie House

The LaLaurie House

When it comes to New Orleans, it is hard to pin down one place as the most haunted. Between the voodoo practiced in the area, the violent crimes committed there and the natural disaster that partially destroyed it, there is plenty of fodder for spirits. The city itself is one of the most reportedly haunted places on Earth. Two locations within the city highlight its reputation best.

The LaLaurie House was once home to an avid slave owner named Delphine LaLaurie. This woman was evil and cruel, even by contemporary accounts not linked to tourism. Her cook, who was kept chained to the stove, set fire to the house in 1834 in an attempt to get rescued. The locals found despicably injured slaves, about seven of them, within the house. People were outraged and Delphine ran off, apparently to die later in Paris.

Most Haunted Places in the World: Gardette-LaPrete House

Gardette-LaPrete House

The Sultan’s Palace or Gardette-LaPrete House is another corner home in New Orleans with a long balcony and a sinister history. A Turkish man rented the property in the 1830s for himself, his harem and his eunuchs. The man was known for having secretive parties, but it was not his life that would make this haunted location famous. The bodies of himself and his staff were discovered hacked to pieces when someone walked by and saw blood seeping out from under the door of his house.

The renter’s identity and that of his killer have never been ascertained.

Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Most Haunted Places in the World: Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary

Evil, brutality, and inhumane conditions lay a fertile breeding ground for the most notorious hauntings. The Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one such place. It was built in 1829, and was the first real penitentiary in America. It was based on the solitary confinement model, in which inmates were kept away from other inmates utilizing tall walls bordering their exercise yards, sound-proof doors, and timed outdoor releases that did not overlap with other inmates. All prisoners ate their lunches alone in their cells until the 1920s.

Cruel and unusual punishments were created and administered by guards. “The Hole” was a small pit underground which subjected the inmate to solitary confinement, darkness, lack of air and food, and no toilet. An iron gag, commonly used to control and severely punish slaves, was also used. In this method the tongue was locked down in the mouth preventing swallowing or struggling. The mouthpiece was connected to the hands, which were bound together at the person’s back. Any struggle would tear the tongue and lead to bleeding. The Mad Chair tightly strapped them in from hours to many days, cutting off blood flow so severely that it sometimes led to amputations. The Water Bath used a method in which the prisoner was drenched in ice cold water and chained up to a wall overnight.

There are numerous stories of disembodied voices and dark menacing shadows lingering the halls of the prison. These stories have dated back to before the penitentiary was shut down, and continue today. It is said that the last group of guards to walk the empty halls after shutting down the institution made claims of footsteps, laughter, voices, and dark shadowy figures darting about. Today, many similar tales continue by both volunteers and visitors.

Haunted Lighthouse Crescent City, California

Lighthouse

This unique place is nestled a way from the coast of California, a rather interesting place which is now designated as a historical site maintained by the Del Norte Historical Society. A museum has been established as well for visitors.

Back in 1855, Congress approved a sum of $15,000 dollars to construct a lighthouse known as Battery Point Light. It rests on a tiny islet, which is connected to Battery Point by an isthmus which stretches about 150 yards from the mainland. It can only be crossed by foot at low tides. There is something else rather interesting about this place; it has claimed to be haunted.

There have been reported sightings by caretakers of the isle over the years, including lost slippers moved around in the night among other things. A paranormal research team stayed at the lighthouse inspecting the area, what they discovered was a rocking chair moving by itself, touches on shoulders and doors suddenly closing.

ghost child

The place is believed to be haunted by not one but three different ghosts including a small child spirit. The adult ghosts are believed to be the parents of the child. Perhaps they were lost at sea and died washing ashore in the afterlife, making this place their new home sort of speak.

The mariners warning light which was first lit back in 1856, has now been completely automated warning ships of the St. George reef – which lies 6 miles northwest of the Crescent City Harbor.

Lighthouse 3

Back in 1964, the earthquake which struck Alaska sent a tidal wave tsunami reaching sum twenty feet high toward Battery Point Light. Both Clarence and Peggy Coons were living as curators in the lighthouse when the waves arrived, and this is what Peggy mentioned:

“The water withdrew as if someone had pulled the plug. It receded a distance of three-quarters of a mile from the shore. We were looking down, as though from a high mountain, into a black abyss. The basin was sucked dry…in the distance another black wall of water was rapidly building. The mammoth wall of water came barreling towards us. It looked higher than our island. When it hit it was like a violent explosion…….”

There have been several novels about the Battery Point Light. These titles include: ‘Walk Across the Sea’, by Susan Fletcher (a 2001 historical fiction for teens) and ‘The Lightkeeper’s Daughter’, by Colleen Coble, which is a 2010 romance book for adults.

(The music video for the Tim McGraw song “Not a Moment Too Soon” has scenes of Tim next to the light on the lighthouse’s top balcony and scenes of the Battery Point Light from a distance)

Five Most Haunted Locations in the World

Danvers State Hospital (Danvers, Massachusetts)

No list of haunted places could ever be complete without an asylum. They are such a part of supernatural lore for two reasons. They were largely abandoned with the changes of mental health care that have come in the past half-century. They were also home to such horrors as the abuse of mentally ill patients and forced lobotomies. Danvers State Hospital may well have been the worst offender of them all, allegedly being the first place lobotomies were used often.

Sadly, this historic building was largely demolished to make way for an apartment complex. Some of its exterior and original tunnels were salvaged, but that is it. Nonetheless, Danvers State Hospital remains a favorite among fans of the supernatural. Moreover, some say the buildings on the property now are as haunted as their predecessors.

The Paris Catacombs (Paris, France)

The Paris Catacombs are a roughly 200-year-old ossuary beneath Paris. These tunnels contain the remains of about six million people, which make them ripe for haunting. Some of the rooms within the catacombs contain the exposed bones of the people laid to rest there. They are often displayed decoratively, such as with the Crypt of the Sepulchral Lamp. To add insult to injury, these displayed remains are largely of bodies exhumed from the cemeteries within Paris and brought into the mines below the city thanks to some very poor burial planning on the part of Parisians.

My Parents' House Was Haunted

You are here: Real Ghost Stories :: Haunted Places :: My Parents' House Was Haunted

Real Ghost Stories

One night I was taking a hot shower and had the bathroom window which was above the tub open a little to get some steam out. There was fresh fallen snow and as I turned off the water, I heard crunching in the snow. I looked out of the window and there was a teenage boy running through our backyard with only a denim jacket instead of a coat. I dried off and got into my pajamas quickly and went in the kitchen and told my parents. My father went outside with a flashlight to see who it may be and came in very pale. My mother and I asked him what was wrong he told us there were no footprints in the snow. Knowing I would not make such a thing up, my mother told me I saw my first ghost.

I had never been afraid of my basement when I was young but gradually, as I got closer to my 20's, I started to feel uneasy down there, as if someone was watching me and didn't like me. My sisters got the same feeling as did my mother. My brother and father didn't feel anything.

At the time my mother became a member of a psychic group and encouraged me to join. Basically the leaders of the group were teaching us how to meditate and bring out our gifts. To make a long story short, we had a ghost hunt at the house and the spirit in the basement didn't like women... Especially me. One night my sister and her friend were at the house, nobody else but me. I went to the basement to do a load of laundry and as I was going up the steps I felt the spirit watching as I got to the top of the stairs I couldn't open the door. The only lock was a flimsy sliding one that was put up because I was a sleepwalker a few years before and had walked into the basement. I put my shoulder into it and couldn't get it open it. I felt something approaching so I slammed my body into the flimsy plywood door with a frame and it felt like I hit a brick wall. Finally I said, "God, please help me" and the door opened when I turned the knob. I thought my sister and her friend were playing a trick on me but I would have heard them laughing and running away. They were outside having a cigarette and my sister's friend was freaked out when I told them what happened.

My sister started a "band" with a friend of mine and a friend of his. They would practice in our basement. One night they were practicing and, as usual, I would hang out with them. We went upstairs to take a break and my mother and I told the boys about the ghost in the basement. The guys were like yeah right. When they went back downstairs to continue to practice they came running back up the stairs. When we asked them what was wrong they said that all the instruments had been moved and they weren't going back down to pack up unless I went with them. They packed up and didn't practice in our basement again.

The house was still haunted. My son WhiteWolf spent the night there several times and each time he was touched. Years ago we were told that our house was a window for spirits to come into and leave this realm. It kind of makes sense as we had an underground stream under the back of the house and plenty of quartz crystals in the yard.

After my parents died my younger sister lived in the house until the county was going to take it for non-payment of taxes. She did a short sale and the man who bought it renovated it to flip it. I have no idea if he knows it's haunted because my sister never told him and I never met him to tell him.

Sorry for this being so long but I hope that you enjoyed my story.

Regards

Haunted Pathway

Wavertree playground in Liverpool, or better known as the mystery, is a known favourite with dog walkers, but what isn't widely known is the ghostly goings on at certain times of the year.
Frank was taking his dog on a late walk like he usually does about 10:30pm. He was walking up the path at the side of the tennis courts when he had the feeling of being watched. This had happened a few times before but he had always dismissed it as his imagination due to being in the park at night. This one night however when walking up the path he spotted a figure dressed in black walking across the field towards him. He called his dog back to put it on the lead, and the figure vanished. "That was strange" he thought to him self, and thought nothing of it.

A few weeks later walking up the same stretch of path, he noticed a mist patch further up, which was strange as it wasn't foggy that night. As he approached it the mist completely vanished with out trace and all that was left was the eerie feeling that he was being watched. Frank, was very spooked out by this. He returned home immediately where his wife noticed something different and asked what happened. Frank explained to his wife what had gone on so the next few nights she went with him. On the third night, the feeling of being watched came over them.

His wife Charlotte heard footsteps behind them however no-one was there. Then they both heard a whistle that made the dog come running over to them like it does when it is called, even though there was no one else in the park and he and his wife didn't whistle. These strange occurrences kept happening every few days until December when these strange happenings abruptly stopped. Throughout the years, Frank has encountered this phenomenon every October to late December.

Frank however is not on his own, a student on his way home one night decided to cut through the park down along the path when he spotted a figure coming towards him then vanish only 50yrds in front of him. Other dog walkers have reported having the feeling of being watched, hearing breathing and footsteps. One dog walker stated that his dog ran towards a shadowy figure who he thought was another dog walker. As the dog approached the figure, it yelped and ran back to its owner walker thinking this man had done something to his dog chased the figure - it vanished in an empty park!
