I don't know who first thought of time travel, and whether or not it was just founded in imagination or if someone knew something that we still don't. I haven't met anyone who travelled through time, nor anyone else who's met such a person. I think it unlikely that I ever will. At this point I expect you're wondering where I'm going with this. Well I just watched a program on National Geographic called 'The Truth about Time Travel,' in which various scientists and mathematicians tried to prove the real possibility of time travel. Even physicist Stephen Hawkins believes it is possible.
Each and everyone had a theory, a different theory, and each one seems dramatically feasable, provided man can travel faster than the speed of light. One had a particularly interesting idea which supposedly involved taking a short cut, although to me it looked like the long way round. Either way, it meant that if it worked, he could be back before he'd set off Mind Boggling or What? Personally I would think that that could cause some problems. What happens if he gets back before he's set off, and then decides he doesn't want to go? Okay I know, that's moving into the realms of sci-fi comedy, and that was never my plan. One thing I noted throughout the whole program, was that most of these very clever people were on the same track in so much as they didn't think you could go back in time. Forward and then return, but not back. That made some sense to me, because as I see it, to be able to go back in time would imply some and possibly many parallel worlds in which our younger-selves still live, or have yet to be born. Unlikely I think, where as the future is still way out there waiting to be discovered. It is tomorrow and hasn't yet arrived. So it's just a matter of the fastest being able to get there first. Doesn't that boil down to the same thing? It's a race.
The person who wins the race has got to the finish line faster, (sooner in time) than anyone else. Maybe that's as close to time travel as we'll ever get, well, that and H. G. Wells. Or maybe it's not. Got headache yet? Bare with me, it gets worse. Mind Splitting. When I was at school, well, I should say when I was supposed to be at school, me and my best friend use to sit and theorise on the universe. Strange you may be thinking. But where does the universe end? Of course there's probably an answer to that now. It ends in outer space, but where does space end, surely it can't just go on forever, and when it does end, what's there at the end?
Our answer was nothing, but what is nothing? It has to be something right? And how far can that stretch? Headache yet? You can go on with this forever. The truth is whatever is out there is far greater that our human minds can absorb. Everything we know has boundaries and edges.
Everything stops somewhere, everything ends. Except this. Which brings me back to time travel. The last man on that program passed a laser beam of light through a small hole to shine on a solid wall at the other side. It was a little more complicated than that, but this is a laymans view. In theory the light that hit the wall should have been much bigger, but it wasn't, it split into many lights in a line. He thought that this proves the possibility of parallel worlds.
Well he's the scientist, not me, so maybe it does. Maybe there are parallel worlds, and maybe we could travel back in time, and what's more, maybe we do! By now you're thinking what's my point? Well I'm getting there now. I was brought up on a farm, if you don't know it's a very practical life, and hard. Back then we worked seven days a week and fifty-two weeks a year. No no, I don't want sympathy. Many people have done the same. We had a milkround, and in my working life since I have also been a milkman, a postman, a courier and a bricklayer. I know, the last one seems a bit random, but never mind. I appologise for throwing in the compacted life story, but you will see why it was necessary. I left those things behind a long time ago, and I don't miss or regret that time of my life. No one should have to work seven days a week, there's far too much to see in this world. And yet these things do not leave me alone. They impose on my dreams and sometimes through the day a thought from the past will randomly pop into my head. In my dreams I will be working again on the farm, or delivering milk to places I know.
And People from my past will be there, clear as day! I mean people who have passed on, friends and family. It's quite often different people at different times. We are doing things that sometimes seem relevant to my life now, more often it's not relevant. Is it in colour? It seems so. I can't speak for other people on this score, but how often do we hear that we are more suceptable to our subconscious when we sleep? What else are we suceptable too? How often have you gone somewhere and thought, 'I've been here before?' Even when you know that you haven't? How often have you dreamed through the night and not been able to remember a single thing about it in the morning? Could this be a parallel universe crossing into ours while we sleep? Are they really there or is it just memories?
I'm sure a dream expert would explain it away as frustration or a message you must listen too, but what of the future? What of the dreams that you know are ahead time that you don't remember, and that feeling that you've been somewhere before? Of course this is not conclusive, and probably never will be. Is it a theory? Well it's my theory, but I'm no professor. At the very least I think and hope it could inspire more budding H.G.Wells. It may be as close to time travel as we'll ever get.
